I 1967 gennemgik Ford Mustang'en sit første store redesign. For første gang siden lanceringen, fik bilen alvorlig konkurrence, hvilket resulterede i at Ford evaluere Mustang'ens styrker og svagheder. Udover Pontiac's Firebird, Mercury's Cougar, og Plymouth's Barracuda, havde Chevrolet planer om at introducere deres nye Chevy Camaro, hvilket fik Ford til producere en mere muskuløs og kraftfuld Ford Mustang.
